Import selected photos into the encrypted vault, open each protected copy to verify it, keep a recovery copy if the file is irreplaceable, delete the Camera Roll original, and then decide whether to clear Recently Deleted immediately or preserve its 30-day recovery window.
Moving a sensitive photo is not one operation. Importing usually creates a second copy; deleting the Photos copy is a separate decision. The safest order avoids two opposite failures: exposing an original you thought was gone, or deleting the only readable copy.
Before you delete anything
- Confirm whether iCloud Photos is enabled in Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos.
- Check whether the photo is part of an iCloud Shared Photo Library or a Shared Album.
- Identify irreplaceable files that deserve a separate encrypted backup.
- Make sure the vault has enough storage and that you can unlock it without relying on the original photo.
- Do not bulk-delete based only on imported thumbnail counts.
The safe move-and-remove sequence
- Select a small test batch.Start with two or three photos, especially if this is your first import into the vault.
- Import into the private vault.VaultBox imports only the items you select and encrypts the vault copies. Originals remain in Photos at this stage.
- Open every test item from inside the vault.Zoom into photos, play videos and confirm dates or filenames when they matter.
- Confirm you can unlock the vault again.Close or background the app, return, and authenticate using your vault PIN or Face ID.
- Choose Delete after import or remove originals manually.VaultBox asks only after successful imports and identifies the Camera Roll assets associated with those imports.
- Review Recently Deleted in Apple Photos.Decide whether you need the recovery window or want the items permanently removed now.
- Repeat in manageable batches.Small groups make failures easier to notice and recover from.
Apple says that photos removed from Recently Deleted cannot be recovered. Preserve another encrypted copy first when loss would be more harmful than short-term recoverability.
What iCloud Photos changes
With iCloud Photos enabled, deleting a photo in Apple Photos removes it from other devices signed into the same Apple Account. The item moves to Recently Deleted for up to 30 days across that Photos environment.
This does not automatically delete the separate encrypted copy already imported into VaultBox. VaultBox stores its vault data separately; its optional backup uses the user’s iCloud account rather than the normal Photos library.
If you want the image gone from the ordinary Photos environment, check more than the main Library:
- Recently Deleted
- Shared Photo Library ownership and participation
- Shared Albums or messages where another copy was sent
- Files, downloads, editing apps and exports
- Offline computers or drives that previously imported the media
Should you clear Recently Deleted immediately?

Common mistakes to avoid
Deleting before opening the vault copy
A success count or thumbnail is not enough evidence for an irreplaceable file. Open the copy and test playback.
Assuming “Hidden” removed the photo
Hidden media remains inside Apple Photos. It is excluded from normal views but is not transferred into a separate storage boundary.
Forgetting Recently Deleted
Deleted items remain recoverable for up to 30 days unless permanently removed. That recovery window is helpful for mistakes and relevant to privacy.
Ignoring iCloud propagation
A deletion in iCloud Photos affects other synced devices. Verify your backup strategy before assuming another Apple device still holds an independent copy.
